Is Nuit Blanche Still A Valuable Event?

When Nuit Blanche first started in Canada, it was promoted as an all-night arts festival, but over several years has turned into an arts & entertainment festival.

On February 27th , I attended Montreal’s Nuit Blanche, which is Canada’s oldest version of the event. Since the Montreal event takes place within a larger festival called Montréal en Lumière, with urban slides, zip-lines above streets, outdoor concerts and a ferris wheel, Nuit Blanche Montreal feels more like a winter festival.

This is great for a broad range of people and many families attend, but is an event like Nuit Blanche, specifically in Canada, still valuable for the artists? Some have argued that it’s not. Others have been critical about the lack of compensation that artists receive for displaying their work.

I still believe that Nuit Blanche is a valuable event for the public. Not everyone understands art, and having non-art activities keeps people entertained, providing something for everyone. For artists, Nuit Blanche is about reaching an audience outside of the gallery.
